The Workplace Integration Centre will provide many services to small to medium sized employers (SMEs) with the goal of ultimately improving labour market access and outcomes for both existing and newly arrived foreign-trained professionals.
Staff of the Workplace Integration Centre will provide much needed services to local employers, including one-on-one business consulting to help integrate newcomers into the workplace; Help with immigration accreditation and licensing; A newcomer mentorship program; Workshops and training for SMEs; and a Web based employer toolkit with resources.
The Workplace Integration Centre addresses clear and key needs in the region regarding immigrant integration. In 2006, immigrants made up on 9.5% of Peterborough’s populations, with only 0.7% arriving between 2001 and 2006 (Statistics Canada). Some employers have been successful at hiring foreign trained professionals; however they have not been as successful in retaining those same employees. Understanding the newcomer experience, the process of hiring immigrants, how to create an inclusive work culture and how to adapt work policies to accommodate immigrants is crucial and is the one of the Workplace Integration Centre’s main objectives. The centre will increase awareness and capacity of employers to hire and retain foreign trained professionals, helping to alleviate future skill shortages and improving labour market outcomes.
