SWIS Program

NCC is pleased to announce the start a new initiative to support newcomer families and students in Peterborough and the surrounding areas. SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) will help families with settlement needs, support student achievement and encourage family involvement in schools and community.

SWIS can meet families by appointment or drop in at home based schools or at the student’s neighbourhood school.  Principals will refer families to SWIS at registration time and anytime during the school year.  Parents and students may also contact SWIS directly.

SWIS will serve all newcomers no matter their immigration status.  SWIS can provide information about:

  • Schools and Education
  • Community Resources
  • Immigration
  • Language Training
  • Health Services
  • Family Support
  • Transportation
  • Recreation
  • Housing
  • Employment

SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) is a partnership of the New Canadians Centre Peterborough and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and the Peterborough, Victoria Northumberland, and Clarington Catholic District School Board.  SWIS is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
