On Saturday, March 5, 2016, the New Canadians Centre and Peterborough Immigration Partnership hosted our fourth annual gala event “One Night in … the Seoul of Korea!” at The Venue (289 George St).

The event was catered by Matsu Sushi on Hunter (107 Hunter St. E).

Through the generosity of our sponsors, silent auction and ticket sales, we raised $20,000 to support our work . Thank you!

Newcomer Entrepreneur of the Year Award

The second Newcomer Entrepreneur of the Year award, sponsored by the Fleming College, was presented. The goal of the Newcomer Entrepreneur of the Year award is to recognize the achievements of business leadership and community involvement made by newcomers within the Peterborough community. Ten newcomer entrepreneurs in our community were nominated and an independent panel comprised of representatives from the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, Fleming College, Trent University and an independent entrepreneur selected the winner after narrowing it down to three finalists.

NCC-Finalists - 026Sana Virji & Ribat Chowdhury

Sana Virji from Pakistan and Ribat Chowdhury originally from Bangladesh both moved to Peterborough to study business at Trent University. After winning Trent University’s Entrepreneurship Week five dollar challenge two years in a row, the two launched the ribbet app in September 2015.

The App is now free on the App Store and Google Play and features coupons from local businesses around town. ribbet has brought the Peterborough community together by engaging businesses, students and residents with this hyper local app.

The talented duo now call Peterborough home and aspire to take Peterborough to the world stage.

Born in Mexico, Javier Bravo is the face behind GiveLo.ca, an online platform where people can buy gift certificates for local businesses in Peterborough or donate to a not for profit organization. Launched in November 2013, it now has approximately 50 local organizations affiliated with it!

Javier is deeply committed to his community, from volunteering with the New Canadians Centre as a board member to giving his time public speaking about his immigration experience.

GiveLo.ca is just an extension of his passion and commitment to Peterborough, celebrating what makes our community healthy and strong by making it easy and convenient to give locally.

Originally from Spain, Monica Silva is the co-owner of a new restaurant in town – Fresh Dreams. Fuelled by her passion for cooking, Fresh Dreams was created to share that love of good, healthy and affordable food in a relaxed downtown atmosphere.

Her customer service style is unique, driven by her love for food and people. She feels comforted being told by restaurant goers how much they loved the meal and to see how clean they leave their plates.

Fresh Dreams gives back to the community by supporting local artists and aspiring artists show off their work. Every other week they host art expositions in the restaurant.
