June 4 & June 18: NCC Supports the Ode’min Giizis (Strawberry Moon) Festival

June 4: Organizers of the Ode’min Giizis Festival are hosting a Community Art-Making Workshop Saturday June 4th from 10am – 1pm at the Cannery Arts Centre on Hunter St.  They have hired an excellent artist to create a craft project that can be made by families and individuals.  This craft project will be something beautiful that the participants can wave in the Community Procession of the Ode’min Giizis Festival on June 18th. Pleaseo bring your families to this fun and free event and also to let people know of the opportunity to volunteer as helpers. See Art Workshops for event poster.

June 18: The Community Procession (like a parade – but everybody joins in instead of watching) travels down George St ( the road is closed) from City Hall to Del Crary Park and opens up the Traditional Gathering Day. Local dignitaries and Elders as well as Drum groups and Pow Wow dancers all walk together, with beautiful 12 foot puppets, windflyers and community organizations’ bright and beautiful banners. People will be wearing their regional regalia that day and you are invited to do the same. This is a celebration of inclusivity and diversity, a shared space of pride and community.  Please contact  hilarywear@gmail.com with any questions or suggestions.

Also note that the organizers are also still welcoming craft and food vendors as well as volunteers for a range of activities. Please http://okw-arts.ca/festival/  or email okw.odemin@gmail.com or call (705) 745-1788.
