Free Courses for Unemployed Adults Experiencing Barriers to Employment

Fully funded by MTCU, this community workforce project aims to support marginalized adult learners in need of literacy and workplace essential skills instruction to achieve their employment, education and training goals. Clients who participate will take part in one 70 hour course; 35 hours dedicated to Essential Skills training, 35 hours dedicated to technical training in one of our 11 courses. Each course will be offered 3 times for a total of 33 courses over the next year; ending March 2011. Courses will continue to be scheduled throughout the next year, allowing clients ample opportunity to get involved now or in the future. Please note, clients may only participate in one course. Funding is also available for wrap around support. Literacy Ontario Central South is partnering with the John Howard Society of Peterborough to provide these services such as transportation allowance, court support or other services.

Available Courses

Jewellery, Stained Glass, Mosaics, Blacksmith, Welding, Electrical, Millwright, Machinist, Gas and Oil Technician, Carpentry, and Food Processing.

Target Group

Adults (18 and older) who are not currently connected to the workforce or educational system, and who are experiencing barriers to employment and/or educational upgrading opportunities such as lack of a high school diploma, poverty, family-counselling needs etc.

In summary potential participants should be:

q    18 years and older

q    Unemployed or underemployed

q    Working through barriers to education and/or employment

Stained Glass: June 3- July 9, Thursday and Fridays (Technical 9-12 at Hues in Glass, Essential Skills 1-4 at Trent Valley Literacy Association) *no classes the week of Canada Day

Electrical: May 31- June 29, Monday and Tuesdays (Essential Skills 9-12P on Monday/8-11A on Tuesday, Technical Monday 1-4P, Tuesday 12-3P) at Fleming College

Machinist: June 1- June 30, Tuesday and Thursdays (Technical 9-12, Essential Skills 1-4) at Fleming College

Gas/Oil Tech: June 1- June 30, Tuesday and Wednesday (Essential Skills 1-4P, Technical 6-9P) at Fleming College
